The Annual Doctoral Workshop fosters interaction among leading faculty scholars and doctoral students on research and preparing for a professional career in academia. The doctoral student participants will broaden their academic network with senior faculty from around the world and develop a better understanding of the particularities of the academic career.
Nomination & Application Guidelines
All nominations must include all of the materials listed below and should be submitted online to the conference website by June 20, 2025. To apply, please upload one (1) PDF document through the online submission system.
Application materials should include:
· Nomination/recommendation letter from a faculty member (with contact information)
· A one-page summary of the applicant’s career to date
· A description of the applicant’s research interests, not to exceed 300 words
Other things being equal, preference will be given to nominees who:
· Are current members of the SMS
· Are nominated by a current member of the SMS
As an international organization with a widely distributed membership, we aim for the workshop attendee composition to reflect this international representation.
One Candidate per Institution
Only one (1) nominee per institution will be accepted to the Annual Doctoral Workshop. The Directors request that institutions pre-select a candidate and nominate that individual only. In the case of multiple nominees per institution, a rank ordering from advising faculty is requested. If no ranking is provided, selection of the one accepted nomination per institution will be at the Workshop Directors’ discretion.

The Educational Impact Award recognizes excellence in contributing to the teaching mission in strategic management. It will be given to an individual who has made an exemplary contribution to quality and innovation in the teaching of strategic management, either through their own teaching and mentoring activities and/or by empowering other teachers with innovations and high-quality teaching materials. Nominees for this award will be judged according to the following criteria:
- Innovation in the teaching of strategic management (e.g. new pedagogies, new media for learning and knowledge sharing)
- Development and dissemination of teaching materials, such as texts, case studies and digital materials
- Writing and publishing on pedagogy
- Evidence of excellence in teaching at their home institution and other places they have taught (e.g. teaching awards, reference letters from administrators or peers, etc.)

The CK Prahalad Award for Scholarly Impact on Practice, introduced in 2011, was created to honor the legacy of CK Prahalad. The award recognizes excellence in the application of theory and research in practice. These include but are not limited to contributions to knowledge through the extraction of learning from practice; authored scholarly works that have substantively affected the practice of management; and/or the integration of research and practice.
A scholar-practitioner who has used applied learning to influence how theory and research guide practice is honored by this award. Special attention will be given to a scholar-practitioner whose contributions have shaped the understanding of global strategic leadership.
To nominate an individual, please provide the following:
- A nomination letter by an SMS member
- A full current CV for the nominated individual

The SMS Service Award is conferred in recognition of significant and enduring service that made an outstanding and distinguished contribution to the Strategic Management Society and its members. The recipient is a person who has rendered lengthy, significant, and effective service to the SMS and its members. Contributions can include volunteer or compensated work for the Society or the field.
Current members of the Board and current leaders of program activities (journals, conferences, research funding) are not eligible. Additionally, Officers of the SMS are not normally eligible until 5 years after completion of their service.

Inaugurated in 2007, the prize is awarded to a relatively young or new scholar, who displays exemplary scholarship that promises to have an impact on future strategic management practice.
This award recognizes a portfolio of work that suggests the candidate will make fundamental contributions to the way we think about knowledge essential to achieving durable organizational success. Contributions that complement existing strategic management theory with ideas from other fields and disciplines will be considered. Eligible to be nominated are members of the SMS. The likely winner of the award will:
- Have completed his/her PhD no more than 10 years and no less than 5 years ago
- Have a record of publication and professional activity that has demonstrated their work to be significant and with impact
