Strategic Management Society
Call for SMS Collections Editor Applications
Application Deadline: March 14, 2025
The Strategic Management Society is seeking applications for an SMS Collections Editor position. SMS is proud to publish three leading journals that are central to its mission of fostering and supporting rigorous and practice-engaged strategic management research: Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and Global Strategy Journal. To learn more about the SMS Journals, including their vision, themes, and editorial leadership, please visit this link.
About the SMS Collections
SMS collections, formerly called Virtual Special Issues, are an initiative by SMS to promote the development of cumulative knowledge on topics of contemporary interest. Each SMS Collection is a grouping of previously published research on a specific theme/topic that has been curated from the three SMS Journals and contextualized with an original introduction written by the guest editors of that collection. SMS Collections serve several purposes, including synthesizing key findings in established research areas, promoting previously published research while aligning it with current topics and informing contemporary debates, discovering hidden themes that provide opportunities for future research, and increasing the visibility of the SMS Journals overall. Each Collection features an original introduction and is associated with one of the three SMS Journals in the Wiley Online Library.
The role of Collections Editor is a new position, comparable to the co-editor role for SMS journals, with whom the new Collections Editor will work closely. The Collections Editor will be responsible for soliciting proposals for potential issues (both formally and informally), selecting themes / topics to feature as Collections, supporting the guest editors of each issue in curating published work from the SMS journals, and editing the introductions for each issue, as well as for promoting and publicizing SMS Collections to increase their visibility. The Collections Editor will also help support the SMS strategic priority of creating content of interest to practitioners and furthering developing a practitioner audience for SMS while also supporting relevance and discoverability of SMS Journal content within Wiley Online Library. In addition, as the inaugural Collections Editor, this individual will have the opportunity to fundamentally shape the strategic direction, cadence, content, and reputation of the SMS Collections.
The new SMS Collections Editor will be appointed for a renewable, three-year term and will assume duties in July 2025. The position is open to all tenured faculty (Associate and Full Professors or equivalent).
Candidates should have the following qualifications:
- Scholarly strength: Recognized worldwide as a strong scholar in the strategic management field. Tenured and Emeriti faculty are encouraged to apply.
- Editorial experience: Has served or is serving as an Associate Editor or Editor of one of the three Strategic Management Society journals (SMJ, SEJ, or GSJ) or has equivalent experience as a decision editor in other leading journals.
- Open-minded and constructive attitude: History of open-mindedness regarding topics and methodologies in strategic management, entrepreneurship, and global strategy research.
- Strong work ethic: History of a strong work ethic in editorial activities, including timeliness and sound judgement about the content of the Collections introductions and journal assignment.
- Collaborative leadership experience: Ability to work effectively as a leader in an extended team. The Collections Editor will work closely with designated Co-Editors from the three SMS Journals, the SMS Publications Committee, SMS staff and Board members, the Wiley staff, and an evolving number of collaborators.
- Passion: Clear commitment to helping the SMS Collections and the field move forward, both operationally and strategically.
- Visionary and proactive leadership skills: The Collections Editor must take an active part in developing the strategic direction of the SMS Collections, planning and promoting the SMS Collections, and coordinating with the SMS Journals Co-Editors on a regular basis. They must also stay current on the latest scholarship trends and best practices for journal management, including ethical standards.
Applications will be accepted until March 14, 2025. Applications requirements include:
- A statement of interest from the applicant including their goals for the SMS Collections as well as logistical items including name, full address, email address, and telephone number.
- A letter from the applicant of up to 800 words summarizing their qualifications relative to the criteria above (in PDF format).
- Up to three (3) third-party letters of support or recommendation (in PDF format).
- A current curriculum vitae (in PDF format).
- If available, relevant statistics (number of papers handled, distribution of decisions, evaluations) from previous editorial experiences at journals other than SMJ, SEJ, and GSJ. The SMS office will supply statistics related to its journals to the Search Committee for each candidate.
The SMS Collections Search Committee will review nominations, select, and recommend the appointment of the Collections Editor to the SMS Board no later than Fall 2025. Members of the Search Committee may include current and past members of the SMS Board, SMS Fellows, and current and past Editors of the SMS Journals, among others.
